Hospice Nurse, Author Suzanne O’Brien on Engaging Families Earlier at End of Life - Hospice News

"It’s really up to the person what a good death is. But you know, if I want to share that we have so many choices to make for ourselves at the end of life, and when we get there without knowing that or preparation, people don’t know what we want or not want.

I’ve seen, literally seen people at the end of life or have a terminal diagnosis transform when you start to share with them the choices that they have. Where do you want to be cared for? Who do you want to care for you? How do you want it to look? Do you want your dog there? Then kind of all of a sudden it starts to turn different. How comfortable do you want to be? We can explain that and make sure the families are supported." - excerpt from The Good Death Book

FACTS:

Older adults are projected to outnumber children under age 18 for the first time in U.S. history by 2034, according to Census Bureau projections. 9/10 people want to be cared for at home if terminally ill.  (Source: US census Bureau)

By 2030, All Baby Boomers Will Be Age 65 or Older

An estimated 117 million Americans needed assistance of some kind in 2020, yet the number of unpaid caregivers only reached approximately 45 million

About 40 million people in the U.S. are full or part-time caregivers for a member of their family. Two-thirds of these caregivers are women and half of these women are working outside the home to provide for their families.

Unfortunately, these caregivers often have to reduce their working hours or quit their jobs to provide the care that a family member requires. As a result, they often lose seniority or a reduction in their retirement or social security benefits because of their decision to leave the workforce.

AARP has reported that these family caregivers spend an average of $7000 per year on out-of-pocket expenses to care for their family members. . For patients with dementia, the costs exceed $10,000 per year. (Source: Forbes)

The US could see a shortage of up to 120,000 physicians by 2030. (This is such a sad projection. What will happen when the shortage comes? Who will take care of us...our parents...our kids? )
